Video 1 - Marvin Gaye - Whats Going On Show | Hide
Footage of a live rendition of quite possibly the seminal Marvin track. Interspersed with shots of early 70’s ghetto Chicago it gives a real feel of some of the social issues troubling Marvin around this time which led to his move away from the more traditional Motown love songs to those which dominated his 1971 album of the same name. Written from the point of view of a Vietnam veteran returning to America, as his brother did after 3 years service, it was voted 6th greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. Marvin at his best.
Video 2 - Temptations – Ain’t Too Proud to Beg Show | Hide
Check out the near perfect dance routines of the original Temptations line up as they perform this classic Motown number in 1966. Led by the enigmatic David Ruffin you can sense his self confidence in his own ability in his fronting of the band. For evidence of the dark & destructive side of Ruffin leading to the sad fall of one of Americas most successful ever bands track down a copy of the 1998 DVD the Temptations movie – compulsive viewing. 25 million album sales later they’re still going strong today.
Part of the inspiration for Northern Funk came from the promoters fascination with the original Northern Soul scene. Thousands of – primarily - white working class northern kids with pockets full of narcotics traveling to places like Wigan to go to a club which didn’t serve alcohol but stayed open all night to energetically dance to obscure black soul music which hadn’t even made it in the States. It’s a bit mad &: makes our Hacienda days look positively tame. This video provides a sense of what the dancefloor was like. Bad clothes, great dancing.
Video 4 - Frank Wilson – Do I Love You Show | Hide
The more obscure elements of Northern Soul sometimes take a bit of listening to to get on with. Not this one. Infectious from the first listen. Possibly the song which epitomizes the Northern Soul sound. An absolute gem. Only 2 originals exist today &: one changed hands some time ago for £15,000. Frank Wilson never performs this track but was persuaded to do it one last time recently in front of a crowd of two and a half thousand soul lovers at – Detroit ? Los Angeles ? New York ? nah – Fleetwood. Northern Soul – bonkers.
